FOMAS GROUP unveils the FOMAS Project 2012 to the press: € 80 million allocated to new equipment and to an innovative manufacturing layout. The goal: achievement of total quality in the fields of production, environment and safety

The Fomas S.p.a. project at its company headquarters in Osnago/Merate, is a feather in the cap amongst the four initiatives that make up the Group’s Industrial Plan.

The plan envisages the installation of plants with cutting-edge technology as well as the creation of a new layout within the company’s perimeter.

The aim is the integration of the manufacturing cycle with technological content whilst at the same time paying the utmost attention to both environmental issues and territorial impact.

"The quality of life and a safe working environment are part and parcel of the Fomas Group’s corporate identity – says Mr. Massimo Pellegri, Plant Technology Director, Fomas Group – and such factors are the backbone of the design, layout and erection of the new technological machinery".

Total investment is to the tune of € 80 million over the next four years ending 2012 for:

  • new sheds housing state-of-art equipment as well as for quality control/shipment
  • an Electro Slag Remelting (ESR) plant which thanks to its advanced process results in very sound, high-quality ingots weighing as much as 110T in virtue of re-melting 35T electrode ingots.
  • a 10.000T press in addition to a manipulator bearing a capacity of 400T/m.
  • heat treatment equipment (furnaces, tanks) and machining units
  • a high-voltage substation for powering the new plants

"Prior to taking off with the new mission, the Company performed in-depth geological research that yielded an optimum position for the least possible environmental impact - adds Mr. Pellegri – for instance, the press has been placed on a plot geologically suitable for reducing vibrations and farthest to inhabited areas. The ESR plant offers ground-breaking technology and has zero-impact; the noise it emits during operation is below 65 decibel, in other words, the humming you have in an office or while strolling in the woods".

Flow of goods has also been rationalized: finished products coming in from external machining and those outgoing towards the end client will be parked in the new shelter on Via dell’Industria, meaning heavy traffic will be pulled away from populated areas.

As Mr . Pellegri points out, "the area north of the company premises will be dedicated to services only, without any manufacturing – It will also house the high-voltage substation powered by an underground line; the building itself will occupy a fenced lower level, that will reduce its visual impact".
